UBUNTU
African and Caribbean Mental Health Support Group
Ubuntu African Caribbean Mental Health Support Group is a group that brings together people from African and Caribbean background living in Rochdale who experience mental health problems as well as people at risk of developing mental health issues as a result of social isolation etc. the group provides an opportunity for mutual support in an environment that respects everyone’s individuality and circumstances. The group is led by service users and volunteers and meets once a month. The group also runs a weekly Telesoir (health film evening) at the Mind Wellbeing centre during watch films with a health theme are projected on the big screen and members then share their experiences and thoughts in relation to issues covered in the film.
What we do:
- Promote positive mental health and wellbeing
- Support each other cope with depression, stress and anxiety
- Help each other find our way back into employment education or training
- Raise awareness among services of our cultural need
- Improve access to services
- Encourage and empower each other to have a voice in local service planning and delivery
- Provide a safe space for peer support, social interaction and sharing experience
